Skiing in Italy: helmets mandatory for adults too

Are you planning a family ski trip to Italy? Before packing your gear, make sure to check everyone’s helmets. Italian regulations have changed recently, and it is easy to overlook this update if you have only been focusing on your child’s helmet until now.

Are ski helmets mandatory in Italy?

Yes. Starting from the 2025/26 season, the requirement to wear a helmet on the slopes in Italy also applies to adult skiers and snowboarders. There is no longer an age limit. Therefore, before your trip, it is worth checking the gear of the entire family, not just the youngest members. This is based on an amendment to Italian regulations published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale in September 2025.

In Poland, the statutory requirement applies to individuals under 16 years of age who ski on designated ski areas. Therefore, parents accustomed to Polish rules should especially remember their own helmets before traveling to Italy.

How to prepare your helmet before the trip?

  • Check the size. The helmet should fit snugly against the head and not shift during movement. A child’s helmet from last winter might already be too small.
  • Adjust the fastening. The chin strap must be buckled and comfortable. Simply putting the helmet on is not enough.
  • Assess the condition of the gear. A helmet must be replaced after a hard impact, even if it looks intact on the outside. Helmet manufacturers also emphasize this rule.

Try on the helmet together with goggles: both items should fit comfortably together, without a large gap above the forehead. The helmet should not pinch, but it must not rotate freely on the head either. For children, check the fit before every season; buying a size “to grow into” is not a good idea.

Family skiing in Italy is about more than just gear

When planning a trip to Kronplatz, Passo del Tonale, or Passo San Pellegrino, check for slopes suitable for each family member’s skill level and locate where your child’s lessons begin. When the daily plan is clear before departure, it is much easier to start skiing smoothly on site. Well-fitted helmets are part of these preparations.

On the slopes, children also need time to rest. Having a shared plan does not mean the entire family has to ski the exact same runs all day long. For beginners, calm conditions, slopes tailored to their ability, and the freedom to practice at their own pace matter more than the total number of runs.

At HSKI, a helmet is a mandatory piece of equipment during lessons. We also remind you that it does not replace sensible skiing: route and pace must always be adjusted to individual skills, current conditions, and slope traffic.
