How do you learn to brake on skis?

Learning to ski is not just about downhill runs, but also about the ability to stop smoothly and safely. What are the most popular methods of braking on the slopes? Here is our guide on how to learn them.

What are the methods of braking on skis?

There are several ways to come to a stop, varying in difficulty. The simplest is the snowplough, which involves positioning the skis in a “V” shape with the tips pointed toward each other. This creates resistance and gradually bleeds off speed. More advanced is sideslipping (braking sideways): the skier keeps the skis parallel and dynamically turns them across the slope, sliding on the edges. Speed can also be controlled using short turns, while experienced skiers shed speed smoothly by riding on their edges during carved turns (carving).

How to learn braking on skis using different techniques?

Braking technique should always match your skill level, which is why when learning to ski, you start with the simplest methods. Terrain shape and snow conditions also play a key role.

How to learn snowplough braking?

Start on a gentle slope with a slight gradient. Set your skis in a “V” shape: tips close together, tails pushed outward. Distribute your body weight evenly across both legs. Gradually increase pressure on the inside edges of the skis—the wider the snowplough, the firmer the braking force. Keep your knees slightly bent and your arms in front of you for better stability.

How to learn skidding (sideslip braking)?

This method requires better body control. Start practicing on an intermediate slope with a simple turn of the skis across the fall line. Keep your skis parallel and, once turned, engage the edges more firmly into the snow to build resistance. Flex your knees smoothly to ensure better control and shock absorption. Keep your torso tilted slightly forward and your gaze directed down the slope.

How to learn braking with turns?

Fluidity is essential here. Start with wide arcs and gradually reduce their radius. In every turn, transfer your body weight to the outside ski. Steer the turns using your legs and hips, without leaning your upper body excessively into the slope. On shorter turns, planting your pole at the start of the arc helps maintain rhythm.

How to learn braking using carving technique?

Position your skis parallel and carve wide, gentle arcs on your edges while maintaining your balance. Shift your body weight to the outside ski so that the edges hold firmly in the snow. Direct your knees and hips toward the inside of the turn, keeping your arms out in front. By extending the arc longer across the slope, you smoothly scrub off speed.

Which braking method on skis should you choose?

For beginners, the snowplough is ideal because it allows for easy speed control and a safe stop. Intermediate skiers frequently use sideslipping, which works brilliantly when quick reactions are needed, such as on a crowded run. On steeper slopes, short turns are indispensable. Carving is recommended for skiers with solid edge control, especially on well-groomed pistes.

There is no single universal method. The choice depends on your ability and the terrain, and over time you will seamlessly combine different techniques.
